In these pieces, Dou explores the concept of ritual and how that is observed in religious contexts. Hailing from a dual religion household, Denzel’s experience with religion has been varying, alternating from both Pentecostal Christian church and Catholic church. Though this contradiction had led to confusion in his own self realised faith; he brings all these experiences into his process.
Collecting a number of visual references, pulled from different sources online and offline, he makes it frequent to grab imagesry that speaks to him and his own lived encounters. Dou’s approach to painting is modest, surrendering to the act by eliminating the conscious and cognitive, in order to tell a story in its truest expression.
Dou’s works also explore his interest in religious syncretism and the idea that there are running motifs, frequent symbolism and rituals shared in different systems, despite what branch of religion one follows.
